In Part 1 of my series on fans, I discussed the good, the bad, and the WTH? amongst k-pop fans. In Part 2, I discussed fan service. Today, I’m discussing the fan club names of rookie boy groups. This post is mostly for fun, and not very serious. However, that doesn’t mean I’m going to let off some groups easy. HAHAHA. For the “BAD” and “WTH?” I’m not saying that the names are bad on their own, but for fan clubs, they are…just not cool.
The Good: BIGSTAR – ONLY ONE
BIGSTAR hasn’t received the most, or best, attention amongst the rookie boy groups. However, their fan club name is probably the best one out there. I was actually surprised at how good it was when they announced the choice. ONLY ONE speaks volumes in relation to who they are, and how they view their fans. In explaining the reason behind the name, BIGSTAR stated that, no matter how many fans they had, their fans were the only ones to them. Seriously, isn’t that just cute? The name was also a suggestion from fans, which only makes it more endearing. There’s no wacky spelling, nonsensical words, and it’s gender-neutral. Good job on the selection of ONLY ONE all around. (The video announcement is just cute.)
The Bad: B.A.P – BABY
First, let me say that this is saying nothing about the group. I absolutely love B.A.P and their music. However, their fan club name isn’t that great. Before they revealed the fanclub name, I (and probably many others) had hoped that the name would be “Warriors” or “Powarriors.” Or some other cool and powerful name. Sadly, I was disappointed. It’s not that the name is inherently bad, it’s just not good. First, let’s talk about pluralization. “BABY” is actually what they call everyone. Not Babies, but Baby. I have seen it spelled as “BABYs.” Yeah, that’s not odd at all.
Then, let’s think about gender neutrality. Most groups have names that could be for guys or girls: VIPs, ELF, Blackjacks, Hottest, Shawols, etc. However, BABY has a strong feminine connotation. You make think that’s a bit sexist, but think about it in context of music, especially K-Pop. How many openly homosexual k-pop artists are there? B.A.P has male fans (some non-fanboy). It must be a bit awkward for them to be called “BABY.” OK, scratch that. It was brought to my attention that male B.A.P fans are called Warriors, which is awesome! However, why can’t females be warriors too? HAHAHA. Now, for females, BABY isn’t that bad of a name. Most females, including myself, have nothing bad to say about being called “baby” by a guy, but some have voiced displeasure of being called “a baby.” But, I’m looking at this from a universal perspective. HAHAHA. The name lacks the greatness that could have been. Their Matoki light sticks are really cool, though.
The WTH?: C-Clown – Crown
I’ve given C-Clown a slide on their group name, simply because I’ve seen worse. But, their fan club name is something else. Although the name isn’t necessarily bad, Crown is still extremely odd. For the most part, I think this name is bad because it’s an inanimate object. Your fans are people, not objects. The fact their fans thought of and voted on the name only makes it worst. Alright, I understand that their symbol has a crown on top of the clown face. However, the choice of “Crown” is so outlandish, you can only laugh. If they were going for objects, they should have chosen something like “Circus.” How awesome would that have been? The C-Clown Circus!! Somebody should go tell them to change it.
Honorable WTH? Mention: EXO
Some may ask why I am listing EXO since they have no fan club name as of yet. That’s exactly why this is a “WTH?” moment. WHAT IN THE WORLD IS WRONG WITH SME? CANT YOU GET ONE OF YOUR MONEY MAKERS A FAN CLUB NAME? HECK, WHY NOT GO WITH “EXOTICS” SINCE THAT’S WHAT FANS CALL THEMSELVES ANYWAY. IT’S BAD ENOUGH YOU HAVE F(x) STILL HANGING IN THE WIND. GET YOUR CRAP TOGETHER!! *Sorry for yelling hahaha*
